PostSubject: Not so interesting Honda build   Not so interesting Honda build I_icon_minitimeThu Nov 17, 2011 12:08 pm

I've had this build thread going for about a year now on another site, but I'ma throw it on here too.

I'm building a pretty simple B20 nonvtec to put in my EF. The is the first engine build I've ever built, so this is all a fun learning experience for me.

What I've got so far:

B20Z2 block
Cable LS tranny (boooooo)
Exedy Stage 1 clutch and stock flywheel (booo)
Hasport engine mounts
LS head with Crower dual valve springs and titanium retainers
YCP pistons, I believe they are b16 style pistons (10:98 compressi on with nonvtec head, 11.5 with vtec head)
AEM CAI
2.25 crush bent exhaust with Magnaflow muffler
Walbro 255 fuel pump

Plans:
Crower 403 cams
Header with 2.5 inch collector
2.5 inch mandrel exhaust system
Aftermark intake manifold (Skunk2 or Blox)
65mm throttle body
pr8 head with head work
b16 or gsr hydro or cable tranny
lightened flywheel

It's this....

I just dropped the rods off at the machine shop to get the new pistons installed. The crank is out and I will be ball honing the block.

So christmas night after dinner I cleaned the crank and main caps. Then I reinstalled the crank, rods, and pistons.

Alright, So i've been doing some research on H-T about nonvtec builds. I've started looking into various intake manifold setups, cam setups, and head work. What I've come to realize is the following:

1. To get Vtec numbers, you must dump more money into a nonvtec build as compared to a vtec build (duh)

But chasing peak HP numbers isn't really what a nonvtec build should be geared towards. I feel like a nonvtec build should really be directed towards mid range power, especially if you're using a B20 block because the torque will be taken care of Wink

With that being said, generally, aftermarket intake manifolds are primarily designed after the Type R intake manifold. Skunk 2, blox, etc. Well, I've read quite a few builds similar to mine and many people complain that these type r style manifolds really kill their power down low and mid range, which is just killing the strong points. I've come across one build where the dude used a b16 intake manifold on his nonvtec swap for all of the reasons i've listed. He said it is a great upgrade over his LS intake manifold and really helps out a great deal in the mid-range.

So, I pitched this idea to pops, knowing he had a spare b16 intake manifold, and he went to work. From what I understand, he's had to tap the head for a water fitting, and block off a hole behind the throttle body. I'm not 100% sure all he's done to make it fit, as I am 4 hours away and working 50+ hours a week lol.

Anyway, here are the pics he sent me today:

Alright, so I just realized I've had this white hatch for 2 years. And for two years, it's had the bumper filler and bumper cut out because it was turbo'd by the previous owner. This is how it looked:

About 6 months ago I finally found an 89 hatch in a junk yard with a good bumper and bumper filler piece... so I repainted it and....

BAM!

I am thoroughly satisfied with how it came out.

Also picked up a stage 1 exedy clutch for the swap

My pops told me he's getting me a header and ac bracket for christmas, and I just picked up sum AEM cam gears. So All i need to buy are the Crower cams and pay for the tune... and the time to do the swap lol.

Some more not so interesting updates:

During thanksgiving, me and pops worked on the hatch. I am leaving the hatch back home while I go finish out the semester in Southern. I hope to finish the rest of the swap around christmas. :fingerscrossed:

This is how she sits now. I'm cleaning the engine bay tomorrow and then wont touch it for about a month. Only thing else I need is to buy cams and tune it.

I also purchased my cams. Crower 62403-2. They're a relatively mild cam. The next step up (404's) have great gains up high, but i've been told they hurt gas mileage, idle lopey, and kill power down low and mid range. Since this car is for the street, I'll want all the low and mid range I can get to make it fun.

Motor should be in the car while I'm home for christmas. Plan on breaking it in with the stock cams, installing the Crower's and then getting it tunes. Hoping it'll only be another 1-2 months before it's finally done!

Non-vtec builds don't put up very big numbers because the heads don't flow very well. Vtec builds have good numbers, but they're all up high (7.5k - 9k).

I'm just excited about the torque. It'll probably put between 150-165whp 115-125ftq.

But going from a 1.6 to a 2.0, high compression with cams... should be pretty fun. If you remember, the zc had about the same power as the 2.5rs when you had the ac on Wink

Thanks man.

I will say that I do have a GSR vtec head that I picked up for STOOPID cheap that I will likely end up putting on the block in about a year.
